STOP THE HURT

ANGER MANAGEMENT THROUGH PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY

STOP THE HURT begins with the fact that we are all human beings with bad days and bad feelings and these negative emotions are usually converted into hurt or hurtful actions. We feel the solution is in understanding this and taking personal responsibility to deal with this hurt. By recognizing it and where it comes from we are better equipped to try to stop the usual courses it takes. We offer a strategy to manage these feelings with our three alternatives to use in order to stop the hurt.

Step 1. DON'T PASS IT
In this segment we show how easily the hurt get passed on from one person to another in a simple "role play" showing the chain reaction of hurt. We stress the importance of taking responsibility for our own bad feelings to break this cycle.

Step 2. DON'T LET IT IN
Since we have all made these mistakes and have hurt others, we must take responsibility by developing a defense to protect our own feelings. Show of Love introduces this defense and teaches students a "delay mechanism" in responding to the hurt inflicted by others. This allows us the time needed to reflect and to make better choices.

Step 3. DON"T GIVE IT BACK
This step offers those choices to make for those times when the hurt does "get in". It also expresses the need to find the courage it takes to make these better choices.
Talk it over... Walk away... or Laugh it off...
By using these alternatives rather than responding in the typical way of just hurting back, students are in fact "managing their anger" and stopping the hurt. Music and fun and audience participation are used as students create and/or perform song, dance and role play in this variety show format.
